Protecting Hooded & Bullock's Orioles
More than 100 orioles have fledged from a single nest in one of our windows. Many nests don't get that chance.
Current Nest Awareness Status
THIS IS ACTIVE NESTING SEASON
Hooded & Bullock Orioles typically arrive in Southern California in late February to early March and may remain active through August, particularly when raising a second clutch.
- Territory establishment (1-4 weeks)
- Nest building (10-14 days)
- First clutch (2 weeks sitting on eggs, 2 weeks feeding babies, 4-5 weeks raising babies outside of the nest)
- Second clutch (2 weeks sitting on eggs, 2 weeks feeding babies, 4-5 weeks raising babies outside of the nest)
Recommendation: Inspect all palms and trees before trimming. Pay special attention to California and Mexican Fan Palms, and look for nests woven under a palm frond. Nesting birds may still be raising a first or second clutch.
It Started Right In Our Window
For more than a decade, Hooded Orioles have returned to our home each spring. Their nest is woven between a screen door and a roll-down blind directly in our window, allowing us to observe every stage of nesting, feeding, and fledging.
Over 100 young orioles have successfully fledged from this single nesting location.
What began as a fascination became a mission. We discovered that many active nests are unknowingly destroyed during routine landscape maintenance, particularly palm tree trimming.
SoCal Orioles was created to educate communities, HOAs, property owners, golf courses, arborists, and tree maintenance professionals about responsible landscape management during nesting season.
Why This Matters
Responsible landscape management protects birds, property owners, and communities.
Nesting Birds
Many migratory birds nest in Southern California between February and August. Hooded Orioles often raise two clutches during a single nesting season.
Fire Safety & Timing
Fire prevention is important, but timing matters. Many trees can be maintained safely while others may still contain active nests that require inspection before work begins.
Palm Tree Trimming
Improperly timed trimming can destroy active nests, eggs, or dependent young birds before they have a chance to fledge.
Protected by Law
Active migratory bird nests are protected under federal and state laws. Property owners and contractors share responsibility for avoiding harm to nesting birds.
